Light turnout and strong performances characterized play last Saturday at the Ancient & Overgrown Tossing Grounds; only two cases were played, but that was enough for plenty of excitement. In the first case of the day Mr. Angus Guberman defeated Mr. David Altherr 39-27, with outcome undecided until Mr. Altherr's last-toss boc attempt fell astray.

Bowing to popular demand, veterans Mr. Lee Wilkins and Mr. Stephen Priest took the court, with Mr. Guberman taking his first turn in the judge's chair. Mr. Priest seized control of the match with a boc in the second quarry of the second dalrymple, setting a record for points scored in a quarry with eight, in route to a 48-28 victory. Only a lackluster 6th dalrymple kept Mr. Priest from equaling or bettering his record of 50 points in a case.

Overshadowed by the winners was the stout play of Mr. Wilkins and Mr. Altherr, who scored 17 and 16 hits, respectively, with Mr. Wilkins tacking on 7 bonus points as well; against more modestly skilled opponents both players would have broken the 30-point mark. Mr. Wilkins, for example, lost 4 points to the boc and lost 9 of 12 contested quarries; a reversal of those numbers would have pushed his total to 38 points.

Mr. Guberman also deserves recognition for his judging efforts, with his steady, authoritative presence in the chair overcoming the occasional lack of familiarity with all the minutiae of the scoring rules. Boccelism enthusiasts everywhere have reason to be excited over the addition of a new, decisive arbiter.
