Back To Article List August 3rd proved to be a fun day filled with exciting team play as well as a successful fund-raising event. Four teams took to the courts for the final event at the Montgomery Street Tossing Grounds, as EKA officials announced at the close of play that the grounds will henceforth be known as Gates Field, in memory and honor of Jeff. After two rounds of team matches, the top two teams competed in a Championship Final Match. The Reefer Weed Raiders, featuring Gus Glaw, Chip Pecchio, Chris Rijo, and Brian Schechterle faced off against The Gates Of Hell, boasting a roster of Dave Altherr, Greg "Brady" Gerhard, Lee Wilkins, and Angus Guberman. At the conclusion of two doubles and two singles Lightning Cases, Gates Of Hell held a decisive 3-1 margin, with only the formality of a fifth case remaining. In an excellent sporting gesture, they agreed to "double count" the last case, so that what was originally intended as a tie-breaker could instead become a tie-maker, possibly necessitating extra play. In an equally unprecedented action, the case was played four-on-four, with no players left on the sidelines for either team. Unfortunately for the Raiders, they could not muster the accuracy needed to extend the day's play, and after a 14-7 victory the team members of Gates Of Hell could celebrate as the champions of the inaugural Jeff Gates Memorial Tournament. updated: August 14, 2008 - (08:05:02 pm) Back To Article List
